I hit my one month mark last Monday. I've been meaning to post a final "My Vegan Experience" post, but hey, life happens. So here it is, only a week late. Through eating this way, I've definitely felt like I had more energy and so does Michael. Michael especially because he always felt tired before switching his eating. I ended up losing a total of 8 pounds....I definitely won't complain about that!
Through this I've learned that if you tell someone you're vegan it comes with a stigma (although it did stop this guy who was selling steaks from harassing me). Typically, I'd get a weird look and probably hear one of a few questions. One of the more popular questions being: "Where do you get your nutrients?" and typically what people are really wanting to know when they ask this question is "where do you get your protein?" So what I decided to do in this blog post is respond to questions or comments Michael and I received the most.
Q: So where do you get your protein?
A: First, I'd like to address that a majority of Americans get WAY more protein than they actually need. Additionally, most people don't realize that there is at least a small amount of protein in almost everything. But, to answer the real question, we got our main sources of proteins from: seeds (pumpkin or sunflower), beans, peanut butter, peanuts, and rice milk.
Q: Basically, you can only eat salads.
A: FALSE. If you know me even the slightest bit, you will know that my will power when it comes to food is almost non-existent. The only thing I couldn't have was meat (good thing I didn't crave meat). But I did have pizza, ice cream, pancakes, cookies, burgers, pasta, etc all vegan friendly, of course.
Q: Make sure you take vitamins because you're not going to get all the supplements you need.
A: God designed our bodies to do amazing things. One being that if you are lacking in something, it typically lets you know. However, it is pretty easy to get everything you need from eating a plant based diet. If you'd like specifics on that check out: http://www.peta.org/living/food/vegetarian-101/vegans-guide-good-nutrition/
Q: You're only doing this for a month, right?
A: Well that was the initial goal, yes. But we've actually really enjoyed eating this way. It's easy to stick to and it's healthy. We've decided to stick to it. We will have times where we enjoy meat or cheese, but for a majority of the time, we're going to stick to a plant based diet.
I think my favorite part of this whole thing was trying new recipes. I look forward to trying even more! Thanks for following my Vegan experience.
